My Practice
Yoga gives me a glimpse of magic in my ordinary life. In my daily practice, I begin to touch my potential and find new possibilities for strength, growth and change. A chance for a 50-something woman to play, fall, laugh and try again. A spiritual practice wrapped up in physical challenge and fun. Trying to describe exactly what I get out of my practice tends to make the magic disappear, kind of like trying to tell someone about a really intricate or amazing dream. So I just go back, over and again to my mat, to that place, where possibilities abound and I am sometimes, weightless and infinite.
My Teaching
I teach Mysore Ashtanga and led Ashtanga Vinyasa classes at Mindbody HAUS in Midtown Memphis and Better Bodies Yoga in East Memphis as well as private lessons in person and on Zoom. Since 2020, I have been in apprenticeship with my teacher Greg Tebb, and have Greg’s blessing to teach into the intermediate series of Ashtanga. My mission is to share Ashtanga Vinyasa in the Mid-South and to honor the lineage passed down to me through Greg from his teacher Manju Jois. I work hard to provide a welcoming, inclusive classroom environment full of learning and fun. I enjoy working with all students, all bodies and all levels - from the brand new beginner to the most experienced seeker. I’m here to help you understand the practice. The practice is here to help you understand yourself.

Student Reviews
“Today’s session was great for me. I learned several little things that should aid in my future practice being more rewarding. You are a splendid teacher and an inspiration. I hope to get back more often for some classes while I am in the area.”
-David G.
"After years of degenerative arthritis, Ashtanga has allowed me to manage pain, and more importantly given my life a daily focus that is life-long. Michele has been and continues to be key in the development of my practice, providing a deep knowledge, caring assistance/guidance, all with such grace and acceptance. She meets people where they are, and despite her evolution in the practice, she walks with us where we are daily!"
-Shelley T.
“I greatly appreciate Michele’s practical teaching style that is subtle, consistent, insightful, direct, and informed. Michele is a true teacher for all levels of yogis interested in the Ashtanga yoga lineage originating from Mysore, India.”
-Jonathan S.
Michele has been such an important part of my yoga journey. As a dedicated Ashtanga student herself, she brings both deep knowledge and real authenticity to her teaching. She knows how to challenge me while also guiding me safely into new places in my practice.
-Tricia A.
I have had the privilege of studying Ashtanga with Michele for nearly five years. Her level of skill and dedication is truly extraordinary, particularly when paired with her extensive knowledge of human anatomy- a subject she teaches regularly, and with legendary enthusiasm.
Michele’s disciplined commitment to the Manju Jois lineage is reflected in all aspects of her teaching. She brings a uniquely high level of technical ability, working with students from foundational asana through intermediate and into the advanced series. At the same time, she brings interest, compassion and enthusiasm to each student’s individual progress. In this environment, the full scope of Ashtanga comes into view. Within it, students at any stage of life can find access to the asana most beneficial to them, and experience the excitement of previously inaccessible poses.
I am one of those students. Under Michele’s guidance, I came to Ashtanga in mid-life, with no athletic background, and hoping to get in better shape for my musical performances. I am now approaching asana I once could never have imagined--including pincha mayurasana, handstands, and even my “impossible” dream of vṛścikāsana. Just as importantly, though, I am now part of a connected community of practitioners here in Memphis. This level of sustained cohesion is rare—it’s truly a vibe, and Michele is at the heart of it.

Ashtanga Class Descriptions
PRIMARY SERIES
The Ashtanga Primary series is an intelligent, systematic way of opening & strengthening the body one step at a time. We start in standing poses to integrate and strengthen the low back, core, hips and legs, then we move to seated poses that deepen the work in mobility and strength. Consistency over time is the way to progress.
INTERMEDIATE SERIES
Ashtanga’s Primary series brings the student to a level of health, creating a foundation of core strength, hip and shoulder opening, and lengthening in the spinal muscles and back of the body. The Ashtanga Intermediate series takes that solid foundation and adds even more strength through backbends, deep hip work and arm balances.
MYSORE STYLE
Named after the town in India where Ashtanga Vinyasa originated, Mysore-style is like a private lesson in a group setting. The teacher guides each student as they move through their personal practice. Newer students can learn the practice at their own pace; experienced students learn postures beyond Primary series with the teacher’s guidance.
